One of the industry newsletter type things just showed up in my inbox with a blatantly incorrect headline. They are claiming that a Belgium based !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Sorry guys, but there are a ton of no tail rotor helicopters that have been flying since the 40's. The Kaman K-125 first flew in January 1947 if Wikipedia is to be believed. After the K-125 and successors, we've got the MD520N that first flew in 1989 and was certified in 1991. Beside that there is the Kamov Hokum, the Chinook, I believe every other Kaman... You think they would do 30 seconds of research before publishing something so blatantly incorrect.

Kamans are just interesting. The meshing main rotors kind of freaks me out but it intrigues me at the same time.

How about a Gyroplane? They aren't necessarily VTOL but they are STOL, have a rotor on top and a propeller at the front, and no tail rotor. But I'm no aircraft expert.

Good call on the Chinook, since our aircraft, along with the CH-46, have two main rotors.

The first helicopters (none of which had a tail rotor) predate the autogyro by about twenty years. Still, you're right, they're rotorcraft without tail rotors.

For some reason I think one of those painted yellow with a smiley face on the front would look hilarious.
